I've spent numerous hours researching my family history and offer my findings in the Links section below. I have only been able to trace my ancestors as far back as the early 1800's. I believe that my great-great-great-grandfather was ABRAHAM FIGART, who came from Scotland. I know that I am related to JOHN D. (unsure of middle initial) FIGART, born about 1821, and I found one record of a JOHN FIGART whose father was ABRAHAM FIGART, born in Scotland.
If you are a FIGART or have FIGART ancestors, chances are that we are related. I've found less than 100 FIGART families listed in the United States and most seem to have their origins from the Altoona, PA area.
I've been unable to determine the origin of the FIGART name, but suspect that it originated in one of the Germanic countries, possibly with a different spelling and changed upon immigration to the USA. If you have traced the FIGART name to the other side of the Atlantic, please share your information by either posting it in the guest book, below, or send me a note (see contact information at the bottom of the page) and I'll post it here.
Wayne FIGART reports finding a Gertrude FEIGERT listed in the Berlin phone book. I've included his note in the guest book near the bottom of this page.
Interestingly, I found two FIGART placenames listed in County Donegal, Ireland. One is in the Clondahorky Parish and the other in the Raphoe Parish. There is also a FIGART street/avenue/lane in Dunfanaghy, County Donegal, Ireland. I discovered this when I did a search for FIGART on the internet and it came back with a bed-and-breakfast and a funeral home, both listed on FIGART in Dunfanaghy.
Melissa FIGART sent a link to a web site in Ireland that lists variations of the FIGART name dating back to 1620 (see the links section below). That info plus the fact that one of my ancestors, Abraham Figart, came from Scotland suggests that maybe the FIGART name may be Gaelic in origin. Should we looking for a McFIGART or O'FIGART among our ancestors? Maybe we have a valid reason to celebrate St Patty's day after all! I've included Melissa's note in the guest book.
Even if you don't think you're related to me, please send me any information you have about any FIGART family history. I'll post your data on this web site or, if you already have the information online, send me the link and I'll be happy to add it to the list.
If you send me the info, it would help greatly if it is already in HTML format. Don't panic! You needn't know HTML, as MS WORD has an option to save a document as HTML. Generate your reports in your Genealogy software (I use Family Tree), then copy/paste the report into MS WORD. Click on file then Save as HTML. Note that this may actually create two files: a document with the filetype of .htm and an image file with a filetype of .gif (the latter is created, for example, if you create a chart).
